Frequently Asked Questions

About Sitting

  • A clear start time range is established at the time of booking, and is usually set for a 60 minute range not too long after you’ve left. While some clients do prefer to have an in person hand-off, which is fine, a 60 minute arrival time range for the sitter is important due to the busy and at times unpredictable nature of working with animals :)

Within 30 minutes after the sitter’s arrival, you should expect to receive confirmation and status update on the home, pet, and sitter. We do request that you, or a designated local, remains available by phone during the sitter arrival window in case of issues getting into the house. After that, relax and enjoy your trip, as your licensed, bonded and insured professional is there to care for your home and your tail-endowed loved ones.

  • While you’re away, you can expect daily updates including 5-10 photos, anecdotes, and pertinent information regarding the well being of your pets and home. Feel free to reach out for extra updates or to notify your sitter of anything at any time during your trip.

Overnight sitting guarantees 12 hours in your home overnight, usually 8pm-8am plus three focused hours caring for your home and pet(s) throughout the day.

Unless agreed-upon in writing ahead of time, there is no guarantee that your sitter will remain in-home 24/7 for the entirety of the booking. However in the vast majority of cases, the sitter is attending to your pets or generally in-home for much, much more than the guaranteed minimum.

  • You should expect your home to be just as you left it and your pets healthy, happy, and relaxed.

If something is not right, make sure you reach out to your sitter as soon as possible to give them the greatest chance to rectify it.

If there are any issues that arise including problems with the house, such as broken items, or the pet(s), such as injuries or illness, you will be notified immediately, and will be kept in the loop of any (extremely rare) necessary claims. We go to great lengths to prevent any surprises upon y our arrival, except pleasant ones of course ;)

  • No matter what length of time you plan to be away, please book an introductory walk or drop in with you home so the pet(s) become familiar with the sitter. We recommend this for any new client, as well as returning clients that have not spent time with their sitter in several months. This creates a safer and less stressful transition for both the human and the animals when the sitter arrives.

Now, if you are planning to be away for less than 36 hours, often times it’s easier to have just a few drop ins booked rather than a full-overnight sitting unless you have a special needs or very young animal to care for.

For extended trips, which we define as more than two weeks, it’s recommended to book as early as possible, and in some cases, multiple sitters may be needed to fill gaps in the schedule. All of these details will be arranged at no extra cost to you, and bookings longer than 2 weeks are eligible for a reduced price consideration.

About Scheduling

  • The best way to book a house-sitting for your home and pets while you are away is to send us an email.

You can do so by clicking here and letting us know your desired travel dates as well as start and end times.

If you are a current client with us, we will get back to you with confirmation of our availability and anything further we may need before sending along an invoice with a request for deposit to hold your booking.

If you are a new client, we will get back to you with a link to set up a trial consultation (meet & greet) to make sure everyone is comfortable and the sitter/pet match is suitable. At this time, we will proceed to collect some information about you and your pet(s).

When we have all the information we need, we will send along an invoice with deposit request for your booking dates. Your booking is not confirmed until this deposit is received.

Then, when we are nearing your requested dates, we will confirm with you all the details so that your trip can get off without a hitch.

At any time, we are always available via email with any questions or concerns you may have! We look forward to hearing from you soon :)

  • The best way to book in-home dog training is to set up a virtual consultation by clicking here. That way we can get to know each other and we can get a feel for what you are hoping to achieve.

At that time, your trainer will listen to your concerns and desires, as well as discuss some training packages and options. Then, they will walk you through what you can expect throughout the process of setting up training sessions.

At that point, we will have a contract and invoice set up, including any discussed payment plans. Once the deposit is received, you will be able to start scheduling 1:1 sessions. Congrats! You are well on your way to improving the behavior and bond between you and your companion(s)!

  • The sooner the better! Because of our level of professionalism and skill, our services remain in high demand year round, and especially during busy times: Winter holidays, Spring Break, July 4th week, and End of summer.

Therefore, we highly recommend booking 3 or more months in advance. We do attempt to keep our calendar visible and up to date, but we can never guarantee service availability until payment is received and written confirmation is sent.

  • The best way to cancel a booking is by sending us an email.

We understand that unavoidable circumstances do come up, however we adhere strictly to our booking and cancellation policies due to the busy nature of our work:

Schedule changes requested to a booking of any type within the 3 weeks prior to service, simply may not be possible and will be honored on a case by case basis. Every attempt to change bookings to a suitable time for both service provider and client will be made, however there are no guarantees. All changes will be confirmed in writing.

Cancellations of house-sitting, drop-ins, walks, and training contracts within this 3 week time frame prior to service will result in the forfeiture of deposit, and a prorated refund of remaining time, credits, or sessions of service purchased will be returned within 30 days of cancellation.

For training sessions, all unused sessions expire and are unredeemable 30 days after end of contract.

Please contact us to work with us on any problems that may arise and any questions you may have about our policies. We appreciate you choosing us for your pet care and dog training needs!

About Training

  • Here at Paws & Kisses we understand that the online dog training world can be a confusing, divisive, and even emotionally charged whirlwind of information.

As a registered LIMA (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive) dog training establishment, our focus is to cut through the noise and use evidence based methods to teach and guide the dogs (and humans!) in our care. We believe in the power of positive reinforcement as well as effective canine communication via voice, body language and tools.

But most of all, we believe just like in humans, dogs are individuals, so while fundamentals are nearly always the same, there is no cookie cutter system to banish unwanted behavior.

The result is a blend of techniques uniquely catered to what YOUR dog needs, that will help facilitate a bond and trust between owner and dog, and create the building blocks to overcoming frustrating behaviors.

Our goal is teach you how to get the most satisfaction and joy from your canine companion, even if at times it seems like you are at your wits end or there is no hope.

Reactive, mouthy, excitable dogs are our specialty, so we look forward to helping you build a fabulous relationship with your dog! Set up a quick virtual consult here so we can help get you and your dog(s) on the right track!

  • Probably not but it depends on what you already have, including your dog’s temperament and handling skills!

While we may recommend some different tools, as individual dogs respond to different things, most dogs can be trained with just a simple slip lead, halti/gentle leader, and in some cases even a body halter (although this tool is not recommended for beginners, and is not right for every dog).

We don’t recommend a flat collar as this can be confusing to the dog, ineffective, and even harmful in many cases. So if that is all you currently have, you will likely be asked to get something else, and your professional will work with you on that. These items are affordable, effective, and always humane when used properly.

When you have your consultation, it is possible your professional will recommend a certain tool to increase training and communication efficacy, but please wait for the professional to advise and teach you how to use any new tool before using something new.

Outside of certain leash and collar arrangements, bite-risk or bite-history dogs will be recommended a humane muzzle and muzzle conditioning which your professional will work with you on. If your dog is already muzzle conditioned, even better, however it is still possible your professional will recommend a different muzzle for the dog’s comfort, human protection, or ease of use.

The only other thing we recommend is having valuable rewards for reinforcing desirable behaviors. Often these are pieces of meat or moist food, and toys like squeaker balls and tug ropes. Having these items in your pocket is fine, although we, like many pros, like having a bait bag.

The bottom line? If you are starting completely from scratch with nothing but a naked dog, you still wouldn’t be spending more than $150 or so tops, and we will help you make sure you are getting quality tools every step of the way. However most people, if they need spend at all, will be spending $50 or less on new equipment, and it all really is case-by-case.

If you have any further questions, feel free to shoot us an email via our contact page if it’s just a quick question. Otherwise book a free virtual consult and we can dive deeper into what’s puzzling you!

  • Dog training is an art and a science. That’s to say, there is no way to know exactly how long or even how well different training techniques will take, because each situation is unique.

That said, studies and experience inform us that a new concept can be learned almost instantly (usually 20 seconds to 20 minutes), but may take two weeks of frequent repetition before it becomes fully integrated as a habit.

To that point, training isn’t permanent…otherwise we could all get in shape by doing pushups once and then never have to hit the gym again! The point is, consistency over time is going to yield better results than if you just send off your dog to a training boot camp.

That’s why we focus on not just training the dog but also on teaching owners and guardians dog handling skills. Much like getting in shape at the gym, clients start feeling results immediately as they start applying their new communication skills to the human-canine relationship. But just like with the gym, the impressive and life altering results come from consistency over time.

With our classes and 1:1 training sessions, we hope to get you off to a rockin’ start nonetheless, so that working with your dog goes from being a frustrating chore to a true delight.

  • We stand by our evidence-based methods and we can guarantee you that our total focus with our time together will be to move you to the results you want.

However, just like with humans, every dog is an individual. In some (uncommon) cases, we might get to a point where we can only manage behaviors and improve obedience as outside forces or the individual dog may make it too difficult for full behavior modification. This is usually just extreme cases, but because of the nature of working with different animals of different temperaments with varying needs of the owner, no training program could possibly promise a specific outcome or result every time.

What we do promise is to never mislead you about what you and your dog can achieve, and focus all our skill and know-how on helping your dog learn to relax into the rules of the human world and to help you develop the best possible relationship with your dog that we can.

  • 100% of the dogs we work with see improvement when the owners continue the advice and training at home.

However, those that do not continue or revert to ineffective techniques will often see regression. This is not the fault of the training but rather the lack of continuing it!

The other important note to make is that it’s not always possible to the desired results simply because of the individual. You might never get a basset hound to do agility with any enthusiasm just as you might never get a whippet to enjoy water sports. We will always help our clients set expectations realistically, and I think you might be surprised what kind of results your dog IS capable of with our help.

About Payments

  • We do have payment plans available!

For 1:1 training packages and house-sitting bookings, we request at least 25% down to initiate the contract, and then 3- and 6- month financing schedules are available, with final payment due at the end of booking for sitting clients.

  • We strive to operate at a fair rate for the level of experience and professional skill our trainers and sitters have, and make many decisions, including choosing to not lease a physical location, to keep operating costs as low as feasible without compromising on important details such as insurance.

To support those who might need help but are not in the financial spot to get individualized assistance, we do offer low cost audit spots of our group classes, as well as payment plans for 1:1 training packages.

In addition, follow our social media accounts @yes.to.paws.and.kisses as well as our newsletter for tons of free tips, guidance and ideas to help with your dog training and care. We appreciate the support and are honored to be able to return the support to you!

  • The short version is if you cancel more than 3 weeks before service for Sittings and Drop-ins, you will be refunded with no questions asked.

Rescheduling within those 3 weeks, due to the busy nature of our business, will result in account credits to be used at the rescheduled time, as there is no guarantee that we will be able to honor rescheduling requests within that time frame.

Cancellations within 7 days of a booking with no attempt at rescheduling will result in the forfeiture of the service cost.

And don’t worry, when you book with us, all our policies are carefully outlined in writing for you, so you will always know exactly what you are signing up for before you pay :)
